A free website now exists www.irishgenealogy.ie which is putting church records online. Dublin and parts of Kerry are now on the site. We have tried it and found it very useful.

The following is a recent posting on the site:-

In the first phase of the project, church records for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kerry are available as are a subset of the Church of Ireland parishes in Kerry. The remainder of the extant Church of Ireland records for Kerry will be made available in due course. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kerry includes parishes in western and north-western areas of County Cork.
The church records for a subset of the Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland parishes in Dublin City are also available. Work is progressing on the completion of the Dublin City records.
The release of further records for online access will proceed on a phased basis. Please refer to the “update of progress” section in this website for news of upcoming releases.

We have just added to our website www.bandon-genealogy.com the Slaters 1870 directory and Guys 1883 postal directories for Bandon and the surrounding areas.

We are currently working on a summary of the Book entitled 'A Short Topographical and Statistical account of the Bandon Union' by W. Spillar 1844 as well as a summary of Townsends work entitled 'A statistical Survey of the County of Cork' 1815. Whilst these two works don't give us extensive details about individual families, they provide a very valuable insight into life in Bandon and the surrounding area in the two timeframes, namely 1815 and 1844. For example we learn from these two works that emigration around these dates was primarily due to the collapse of the weaving industry from 1826 onwards.

We located some quaker records from the early 1600s and 1700s in the Cork Archives. The family names include Knight, Massey, Jennings, Collier, Davis, Gittos, White, Morris, Perceval, Rogins, Abbot and Chamberlaine. The microfilms are quite difficult to read,

Mallow Heritage Centre

On a recent trip to Mallow we checked out the tourist office and Heritage Centre. Two people in front of us at the tourist office were enquiring about genealogy research. The friendly assistant told us that she gets quite a few enquiries each week.

Next we visited the Mallow Heritage Centre which is located in the Parish Centre. It appears to be a FAS training location. The shelves are filled with transcriptions of parish records, both Roman Catholic and COI. The caretaker during our visit was a bossy unwelcoming lady so visitors to our shores be warned!! She commanded us to 'SIT' and then said 'Talk to me'. We asked about the process for making genealogical enquiries whereupon a pre-prepared set of papers was thrust at us. Pament of euro 65 was required whether or not the search was successful. Visitors have no access to either the computers or the records at the centre. They must use the computers at the nearby library or internet cafe. This office is purely for those who, ironically, as part of a government funded scheme, are transcribing all the records.

So researchers in North Cork - be warned! Don't even attempt to visit the Mallow Heritage Centre. It is a waste of time and far from a welcoming experience. If you need their services, apply online and hopefully the online reception will be a great deal friendly than the lousy welcome we received - Perhaps a smile comes to their faces once they get your euro 65 in their little mits.

This visit has inspired us to put as much free genealogical information on our Bandon Genealogy site. Remember without the families, the churches wouldn't have any records so our argument is that genealogy research should be free!! We certainly don't blame the churches for our frosty Mallow reception. I doubt they see a single cent of any of the funds that are collected.

Cloyne, Cashel and Emly Roman Catholic Church Records

The National Library recently released for viewing microfilm copies of historic parish registers for the Diocese of Cloyne and those of Cashel and Emly. Access to the records was closed in 1992 after the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, Dr Clifford claimed copyright. Since then the National Library has taken legal advice and data from the records could only be obtained by paying for a search at the Diocese's Heritage Centre.

The National Library's collection of microfilms covers the surviving pre 1881 baptismal and marriage records of almost all Catholic parishes throughout Ireland.

Records of Officers of the First Irish Police Force

Records of more than 80,000 officers from the first Irish Police Force from between 1816 and 1921 are now available at www.ancestry.co.uk. It includes names, year and place of birth, age on enlistment and marital status. Thousands of officers emigrated to Ireland from the US, Australia and the UK to enlist in the force. In 1920 alone there were 10,000 new recruits.

The 1911 online census

A recent article in the Sunday Times suggests that a staggering 31 million searches have been made on the 1911 census of Dublin. What is so surprising is the number of Irish residents who are now interested to search for their ancestors.

Gradually more counties are being added to the online census and it is expected that 1911 and the 1901 census for the entire country of Ireland will be fully completed by mid 2009

We have added over forty new files to the Bandon Genealogy website today. These include some parish entries for Abbeymahon, Templemartin, Killowen, Knockavilly, Lislee, Desertserges, Timoleague and Murragh. There are also many more Bandon records including rent rolls from 1650 onwards, a full 1717 survey of Bandon with very good descriptions of houses, additional Bandon lease and tenancy information as well as several more entries under miscellaneous lists.

Cobh Genealogical Project charges for searches

Some of the Bandon registers have been sent to the Cobh Genealogical Project to be computerised, microfilmed and then forwarded to the RCB library. I have discovered that anybody wishing to access those records while they are being transcribed will have to pay euro 25 for each simple search - in my opinion, a rip off considering that you can consult the records for free at the RCB. For those looking for further information about the project, there is information on the Diocese of Cork Church of Ireland website

A couple of us are gradually computerising the records in the Bandon area and will offer the information for free. We have completed a number of these but still have some to do including some of those which have now ended up in Cobh. Had we known that there was a charge, we would have been vocal in resisting the transfer of these records.

We understand how difficult it is to get to the RCB especially for those who are based abroad. Anybody close to London who is researching Cork ancestors should remember that the Michael Leader collection at the Irish Genealogical Research Society has transcriptions of most of the parish records. This library is open on Saturday afternoons. There is a modest fee to become a member. One of the volunteers is from Bandon.

Knockavilly Former Church of Ireland Site

Once again a big thank you to Barry who helped us to find the former site of the Knockavilly Church of Ireland and the old Knockavilly graveyard nearby. For those interested in its location, as you drive from Crossbarry to Bandon take a right turn at a crossroads about a mile outside Crossbarry and continue on this road until you see a sign pointing to the Knockavilly graveyard. The graveyard is a bit overgrown but there are a number of old headstones which are clear enough.

The old Church of Ireland site is nearby but the ruins are barely visible as the church was taken down. To find the site, continue past the graveyard and you will come to a left turn. Continue until you find an opening on your left.

Kinneigh Graveyard Survey

Coppeen Archaeological Historical and Cultural Society are currently creating an inventory of graves in Kinneigh Graveyard (beside the round tower). They are appealing to anybody who can positively point out and identify graves to help them do so. The Kinneigh Round Tower has been recently restored and two graveyards and a church are close by. On the southern side, beside the church of St Bartholomew, lies the Church of Ireland graveyard. There are about 38 grave enclosures each with a headstone bearing details of those interred. Most of these burials have taken place during the 20th century. The church itself was built in 1856.

On the northern side of the church, a one acre site is covered in a dense concentration of low uninscribed gravemarkers. Centuries of burials have taken place here and two previous churches stood in the same area.

Leighmoney Church Site

Thanks to Barry Bradfield, we were able to locate the site of the former Leighmoney Church of Ireland. The site is directly opposite Poolnalong (Shippool) castle and a house now stands where the church was. I also visited the ruins of a previous Church. To get to this, continue along the R605 past Poolnalong castle ruins and you will find a sharp left turn next to a yellow house. Continue along this road for a few hundred yards and there is a wooded area with an old church-like gate into it. The ruins of the church are visible.

Bandon Genealogy and the Lismore Papers

Our recent research has been concentrated on the papers of the Dukes of Devonshire, the landlords for most inhabitants of Bandon town and many of the surrounds. We are posting as much as possible on the website but Bandon researchers should check this resource for themselves if they have the opportunity, as it is extensive and rich in information on local families.

Michael Leader Collection at the Irish Genealogical Research Society in London

For those people researching protestant families in the Bandon area who are based near London, The Irish Genealogical Research Society holds the Michael Leader collection. It contains copies of most of the Church of Ireland records for the Bandon area. The library is only open on Saturday afternoons and is manned by volunteers. The collection is a tremendous resource.

Roman Catholic Parish Records for Cashel and Emly

The National Library has reopened public access to its microfilm copies of the registers for some areas which have been closed for 15 years because in 1992 the Catholic Bishop of Cashel and Emly claimed copyright. Since then, data from the records could only be obtained by paing for a search at the diocese's heritage centre. This decision affects records in an area covering half of Co Tipperary and a large part of East Limerick. The registers were microfilmed in the 1950s and 1960s

Leighmoney Church near Innishannon

Today we had a fruitless search for the ruins of Leighmoney Church near Innishannon. We found the house Leighmoneymore but couldn't find any trace of a church in the surrounding area. We will have to check with the RCB to see if they can give us directions. We have a photo of what the church looked like. We know that it was located on a hill.

Bandon Lease information 1600-1800s

We have been researching leases in the Bandon area that fall between the 1600 and 1800s. These leases are full of family information including family members and relationships. We are posting some of this information on the site today which we hope that researchers will enjoy. Some of these leases are difficult to read so some errors may well occur in transcription. In spite of any potential errors, these leases are a treasure for Bandon researchers as many contain information not found elsewhere.

Ballymodan Protestant Census for 1846

Today we managed to post part of the 1846 Ballymodan protestant census (A to Fa) on our website. The remainder of the census will be posted at a later date.

Unlike the 1834 census, this manuscript did not contain the ages of the children but it did contain notes about some of the families in the census. We have posted these notes along with the householder details as we feel that it is interesting for those researching their families. As with the 1834 census, some entries were difficult to read so there could well be errors in the transcriptions. We apologize for this..

We have finally added the Ballymodan Bandon Protestant census for 1834 to our website www.bandon-genealogy.com so please take a look at it. It is invaluable for those researching protestant ancestors as it gives the head of the household and all family members often including their ages if they were children. We apologize for any errors as the manuscript was difficult to read and it took many many hours to transcribe.

In time we will add an alphabetical listing to this census but for now you will have to use the edit 'find now' function in your browser to locate specific families without having to scroll through every entry.

My first visit to the Cork Archives

Yesterday I visited the Cork Archives for the first time in search of further information about the genealogy of Bandon and the surrounding area. The staff were very helpful and provided me with a list of documents that might be useful. It will take me ages to work my way through all the manuscripts, boxes etc. Some of the collections haven't yet been archived.

I started with the Board of Guardian Minute books for the Bandon Poor Law Union. Many pages are extremely difficult to read but it gives a very interesting account of how the work houses were set up and how the funds were raised. I can't wait for my next visit as there is so much to go through.
